Cologne is a city of diversity, yet this reality is still too rarely reflected in the programs and structures of many cultural institutions. We often talk about “our” audience, but we actually know too little about the people who live here. This event addresses exactly that: Studio Audience uses concise statistics to provide a clear demographic overview of Cologne and highlights the potential of the city’s diverse community. The goal is to bridge the gap between cultural offerings and the everyday reality of Cologne’s residents.

Why you should attend

This event is a must for all cultural workers and artists involved in program development and outreach. After gaining a broad overview of Cologne’s urban society, we will take a closer look at teenagers and young adults—a demographic often referred to as the “audience of the future,” yet whose own opinions are rarely sought. Through direct conversation with young people, we’ll learn firsthand what barriers exist and what needs to change to engage them as active participants. Discover how to successfully engage with so-called “non-visitors” and how cultural participation can be put into practice.

Behind the event is Studio Audience, a specialized department of ArtAsyl e. V. They advise cultural institutions on how to break down barriers and enable genuine participation. An event that doesn’t provide ready-made solutions, but asks the right questions to open up the cultural sector to all residents of Cologne.
