What It’s About

“Dzudza” emerges directly from the vibrant streets of Maputo and tells a powerful story of resilience, community, and resistance. Body, movement, and song merge here into a poetic choreography that floods the stage like a living sea. Inspired by hymns, children’s games, and traditional folk songs, the performance creates a space where spirituality, everyday life, and identity intertwine. A central symbol is the capulana—the traditional Mozambican cloth. It envelops the dancers and stands for connection, protection, and the overcoming of rigid boundaries between male and female, local and global.

Why You Should Come

Experience a performance that challenges familiar imagery and opens up entirely new perspectives on human connection. Under the direction of internationally acclaimed choreographer Idio Chichava, the group Converge+ demonstrates how contemporary dance from Mozambique addresses global questions of belonging. The production is far more than a dance performance; it is a ritual experience that draws the audience into a vortex of rhythm and visual aesthetics. Anyone who wants to know how resistance takes shape through pure vitality and collective movement should not miss this German premiere.

Pssst!

The Converge+ group is celebrated worldwide for its energetic works, most recently for “Vagabundes.” “Dzudza” is part of their major 2026 European tour. Choreographer Idio Chichava understands better than almost anyone else how to weave the aesthetics of African traditions with the visual conventions of contemporary European performing arts.
