What It’s About
“When we speak, we fear our words might not be heard or welcomed. Yet when we remain silent, we remain fearful. So it is better to speak,” wrote Audre Lorde. But why do we often choose silence? Silence can be a safe space, but there are moments when it renders us invisible. “SILENCE—a choral piece” is a performance about solidarity as active cohesion through raising our voices together. For the first time, incarcerated individuals from the women’s correctional facilities in Cologne and Willich are collaborating on a performance.
That’s why you have to come in
Because silence needs our voices—through movement, voice, and conscious silence, a polyphonic chorus emerges about dignity, joy of life, and shame that lies on the wrong side. It’s about daughters, sisters, mothers, and the power of loving solidarity with one another. Directed by Eli Pleß and with musical direction by Lilian Laval, the stage transforms into a place of self-empowerment. In keeping with LasTesis’s slogan, “What happens to one of us happens to all of us,” the audience is invited not only to question the collective silence but to break it together.
